. . . that creationists are simply wrong. This article is not exactly what I would call “light reading,” but it is pretty comprehensive is showing that there is a Universal Common Ancestor (UCA) to all life forms on Earth. This is a key point of the theory of evolution.
In the conclusion of On the Origin of Species, Darwin proposed that “all the organic beings which have ever lived on this earth have descended from some one primordial form”2. This theory of UCA—the proposition that all extant life is genetically related—is perhaps the most fundamental premise of modern evolutionary theory, providing a unifying foundation for all life sciences.
They were actually able to put some probability numbers on it:
Therefore, UCA is at least 102,860 times more probable than the closest competing hypothesis.
I’m a math guy. I especially am into large numbers. I can’t begin to tell you how insanely large 10^2860 is. For comparison, the number of sub-atomic particles in the universe is estimated at 10^87. That is one 10^2773rd of 10^2860. i.e., creationism = wrong, evolution = correct. Well, I’m glad THAT debate is finally over.
